"Be careful with it! You never know what it will do. Don't open it while you aren't looking..." The keeper was giving her a last-minute warning. But Lane wasn't listening. She was tucking the book under her arm and running. When she got to her house, she looked at the cover The Plant That Killed. Talk about weird book titles! She sat down and opened the book. The Plant That Killed, Chapter one. She read and read. The book was apparently about a girl who got a book and then left it open when she was asleep. It ended with sharp, thorn vines sprouting from the book. The last few words were smeared with dark, jungle-green splatters and red, blood-like marks. No, the marks were on almost every page. What was it? The Keeper probably spilled some of the gross asparagus juice. And that bat's blood. It was weird. Keeper never dirtied his books. She flipped to the back of the book, expecting a summary. In glittering, bold golden letters, it said
Beware the Plant. What? What 'plant'? Who cares about a plant? She looked at the clock. 10:30. She should probably go to sleep. She pulled the leather strap around the book and buckled it. Then she shoved it into the corner of the book shelf. She hopped into bed and pulled up her Griffin-covered covers.
She woke up to rustling, and looked at the clock 12:58. What was making the noise? It seemed to be coming from the bookshelf. As soon as she looked, the noise stopped. The Plant Book was in a different place. She picked it up and opened it. She read it again looking for clues. But she was tired. She walked to her bed and kept reading. She slowly blinked. Her eyelids felt heavy. She fell asleep, the book opened in her arms. Vines slowly crawled their way out. Sharp, thorny vines. The tips of the thorns were covered in thick maroon liquid. It crept out of the book... scratching the pages and wiping green liquid on them.
He had warned her about the book. Now, it was too late.
