"John? What are you doing in there?" his mother asked. Now Johnathan was scared. If his mom saw Jewel, then she would tell him to return her to her family. "Uh, nothing Mom," Johnathan answered. He was lucky that he heard the sound of footsteps getting quieter and quieter as Johnathan's mom walked away from his bedroom. Johnathan knew that he had to hide Jewel, but how? He looked around his room. The only hiding space he could keep a secret from his mom was his underground lab. He took Jewel down into his lab and turned the lights on. He went into a small room he had used to store majestic and rare items that he owned. It included Pon Cedilion's bed, the bed the Spanish man slept in when he died. Johnathan lay Jewel on the rare bed and opened his solar-powered windows. He put a slice of his mom's two-layer red velvet cake and a glass of hot cocoa on a golden side table next to the bed. Then he carefully turned off the light, closed and locked the door, and was in his bedroom just in time to hear his mom say, "John! Dinnertime! Daddy brought some buffalo!"
"Hi Jewel," Johnathan said softly, again so she wouldn't freak out. This time, Jewel turned, looking right at Johnathan. Now Johnathan was freaked out. If she had a dagger somewhere where he didn't notice it, or she grabbed one of the old weapons, he was done for.
"Did you bring me here?" Jewel asked quietly. Johnathan hesitated, then said,
"Yes, I did. You're beautiful, and I'm not going to let you get hurt."
Jewel looked straight into Johnathan's dull, brown eyes. Johnathan walked over, sat on the bed, and rubbed Jewel's forehead with the wet washcloth.
"I need to tell you something. And trust me, it's a big deal. In fact, the whole world depends on it," Jewel said seriously. Johnathan nodded, as if he were saying, "Ok." Jewel cleared her throat and started to explain, "There is a magical book. It's called the Book of Lore. It's really important. It has all the information in the world. The person who writes their name in the book rules the world. But if it falls into the wrong hands, then the world is doomed." Johnathan nodded. He knew what it felt like to be doomed, like when he had been in massively huge trouble for falling in the Blue River in the winter.
"The Book of Lore is in the wrong hands. The dreaded Ice Queen has the Book of Lore, and with it in her hands, the world could end. We need you. There is a sword that can only be retrieved by a magic code in the Sacred Spring. We need you Johnathan..." Jewel said, unable to finish. Johnathan felt like he was in love. In fact, he was in love, but he wasn't about to admit it to Jewel. He was afraid that Jewel would kill him if she knew.
"I'll do it," Johnathan blurted, realizing too late that what he had said might make him die even if it wasn't the person he was in love with. Great, just great, Johnathan thought. But he was also glad that he said what he had said.
"Ok. The magic code is..... 777893421," Jewel whispered in Johnathan's ear. Johnathan knew that now he could help Jewel restore the Book of Lore. Now he could finally have someone to love.
I'm hooked! Cannot wait to see what happens next...
